NFL Network remaining on Comcast, for the time being

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Gadget, HD, Mobile

Filed under: Industry , Cable , Sports As you already know, the NFL Network’s contract with Comcast expires tonight , and while the two fight it out over where the channel belongs, on basic cable or a sports tier, it’s been threatening to leave the cable company’s lineup altogether. Not quite at the 11th hour however, comes word from the Comcast Voices blog that the two are still trying to work things our and due to currently “productive discussions” NFL Network will stay on Comcast systems for now. It’ll still be some time be some time before their court case has a ruling, but we’re sure your voice on the matter has already been heard . MSI’s all-in-one Wind Top AE1900 gets dissected

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Gadget, HD, Mobile

MSI’s new all-in-one Wind Top AE1900 may look all neat and tidy on the outside, but it’s an expectedly different story on the inside, as the folks at Blogeee.net found out when they unceremoniously ripped one apart. Of course, there aren’t exactly a ton of surprises to be found, but it does look like anyone hoping to upgrade the RAM may be out of luck, as the standard 2GB of RAM is simply soldered on with no slot provided for expansion — although there seems to be a bit of confusion as to whether that’ll be the case in the actual retail version, or just this early version sent out for review. Hit up the read link below for a closer look. [Via Eee-PC.de ] Filed under: Desktops MSI’s all-in-one Wind Top AE1900 gets dissected originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Apr 2009 22:03:00 EST. Ferrari splitting ex-Gizmondo exec Stefan Eriksson’s tale optioned for a movie

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Gadget, HD, Mobile

At last, former Gizmondo head honcho Bo Stefan Eriksson’s story is finally going to be told on film — or rather, the one told in Wired will be. Writer-director Craig Zobel and producer Beau Flynn have optioned the rights to create a movie based on the publication’s October 2006 article “Gizmondo’s Spectacular Crack-up” by Randall Sullivan, which chronicles the build up to his infamous car crash . Flynn’s production company Contrafilm will be backing the project, and should the movie actually make it to theaters and be successful, we suspect there’ll be plenty of material for a sequel. Apple mulling price cuts, developing netbook competitor?

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Gadget, HD, Mobile

Sure, Apple just posted a record quarter of earnings , but it’s been taking a beating lately on the price issue — not only have cheap netbooks become the hottest category in the market, Microsoft’s Laptop Hunters commercials have reignited the Apple tax debate. That appears to have the wheels in motion in Cupertino: AppleInsider says the MacBook and iMac lines are soon to be bolstered with lower-cost options that should take some of the bite out of Redmond’s marketing. That’s certainly interesting, but here’s the real noise: according to AI, the low-cost machines are just an interim solution while Apple preps a new tablet line to take on netbooks directly without making any of the design sacrifices Steve Jobs has repeatedly pooh-poohed . Wild — but it jibes with those recent whispers about a Verizon / Apple meetup and those reports that Quanta’s busy building something with a 10-inch display. So — cheaper Macs in the short term, crazy-insane iPhone tablet / MID thing riding a unicorn sometime later. You believe any of that? Sheila the Laptop Hunter picks a PC, keeps it civil

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Gadget, HD, Mobile

We’re not sure if Microsoft is winding down its Laptop Hunter campaign , or just decided to step off the class warfare a bit, but this latest ad is pretty hate free. Shelia, a filmmaker with a $2,000 budget, asks the hard questions like “is this graphics card going to be powerful?” and walks out with an HP HDX 16t (an upgraded version of Giampaulo’s kit of choice ). The MacBook Pro’s mere 2GB of RAM at that pricepoint just didn’t fly, though we have to wonder which self-professed video editor hasn’t already picked a side in the age-old Avid vs. Final Cut Pro debate — which could’ve helped cut down on the soul searching. Video is after the break. Drool-worthy MID concept stops us in our tracks

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Gadget, HD, Mobile

We see plenty of semi-yawn-inducing MID s around the office here, and concepts are certainly a dime a dozen in this racket, but Jan Rytir’s concept gave us pause. The hyper-hip look of the design makes it startling in a field not generally known for its sexiness, and the bottom rainbow colored tabs are just icing on that sexy, sexy cake. In this rendering, the whole package would measure 180 x 80 x 20mm, have a trackball on the right of the QWERTY slide out keyboard, and boast an Atom CPU, two USB ports and an SD card reader. Can somebody build this? Please? We promise: ravers everywhere will thank you. Philips 56-inch Cinema 21:9 hands on

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Gadget, HD, Mobile

Filed under: Displays , Philips , LCD We’ve had more than a few vantage points of the Cinema 21:9 ultra widescreen HDTV from Philips over the last few months but Tweakers.net finally got one loose from the world of concept photographs and trade show demos for some real seat time. Translation isn’t necessary to ogle at the Transformers Blu-ray playing with no bars, but looking beyond the pictures revealed appreciation for this LCD’s quick refresh rate and relatively low power requirements. Luckily, we won’t have to figure out how to get the 153cm x 26cm x 87cm box it ships in home, what with the lack of a U.S. release and all. Routon previews its Android MIDs

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Gadget, HD, Mobile

Android on netbooks might be the fad du jour, but it sounds like Routon’s still working the MID angle — the company just dropped word of two devices in the pipeline. The P760 and P730 are said to be in the “research phase,” so we don’t know too much about ‘em, but they certainly look nice, and they’re scheduled to hit sometime in the second half of the year. Honestly, though, we can’t help but wonder when and where we’re supposed to use these things — anyone craving a MID over a netbook or smartphone? Frozen iPod returns from the grave

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion , Hardware , Multimedia , Odds and ends , iPod classic Andrew sent us this great story — he found an iPod classic in the melting snow of Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. It had apparently been there “since early winter,” and was frozen solid… as is the case, we’d imagine, with most things left outside there between September and April. Incredibly, though, once taken home, cleaned up, and given a warm cup of tomato soup and a grilled cheese, it started right back up again. Everything was completely intact — he says it even displayed the correct date. Pretty impressive for Apple’s little music player (and mine’s even stuffed in a Vaja case , so I know it’ll always run for me — assuming I don’t drop it in a pile of snow somewhere). He says there is a name on the iPod, so if you’ve been around the Whitehorse area and have recently dropped your iPod near a place called Takhini School, leave him a note and he will probably be able to get it back to you. But do it quick — he’s giving things about a week, and then it’s finder’s keepers. We don’t blame him: who wouldn’t want an indestructible iPod? Acer: Windows 7 coming October 23rd pre-loaded on Z5600 AIO

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Gadget, HD, Mobile

If all this talk of Windows 7 Release Candidate 1 has thoroughly piqued your interests, here’s something to tickle your fancy even more. Acer UK marketing director Bobby Waltkins has told Pocket-Init that the Z5600 all-in-one PC is due out October 23rd along with — and here’s the kicker — a genuine copy of Windows 7 pre-loaded on the device. That jibes with what Compal’s president said back in late February, but it’s hard to say for certain from the wording of his response whether he’s referring to the OS’s wide release or just his company’s 7-equipped desktop, although his talk of a 30-day upgrade free upgrade period might be suggesting the former. Until the boys in Redmond call it official, we’re just gonna mark our calendars very lightly with a pencil. Switched On: Windows 7, Non-Starter Edition

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Gadget, HD, Mobile

Ross Rubin ( @rossrubin ) contributes Switched On , a column about consumer technology. Microsoft is making many well-received improvements in Windows 7, but may be in for a black eye on its Starter Edition because of growing misconceptions that it has optimized and recommended the limited Starter Edition for netbooks. For instance, the ad copy for the Apple commercial jabbing Starter Edition almost writes itself. “Hello, I’m a Mac.” “And I’m a PC.” PC is trying to juggle. “Hey, PC. What’s with the juggling act?” “It’s my new operating system. See, it only lets me run three programs at a time so I need to stop doing one thing when I want to do another. Really keeps me on my toes thinking about which three programs I should use. Of course, I could upgrade to a more expensive version that gives me the capabilities I should have had from the beginning.” PC drops the balls. “Hmm, really? Every Mac lets you run as many programs as you want out of the box.” “Well, that would be nice. I’d sure like to send someone an e-mail about that.” “That’s a good idea, PC. Why don’t you?” “Because I had to quit my e-mail program to say that.” PC starts trying to juggle again. Cut to iMac with “Mac” desktop Continue reading Switched On: Windows 7, Non-Starter Edition Filed under: Laptops Switched On: Windows 7, Non-Starter Edition originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Apr 2009 18:01:00 EST. Phoenix Motorcars undergoing restructuring, still committed to EV space

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Gadget, HD, Mobile

With proven success stories like Tesla struggling to keep those electric car dreams alive in today’s economy, it’s no shock to hear that at least one little guy (that’d be Phoenix Motorcars ) has caved to the pressures. After reviving itself once already late last year by nailing down a partnership with the absolutely stunning state of Hawai’i, it seems the company hasn’t been able to progress as planned with its intentions to bring EVs and an electric vehicle infrastructure to the island of Maui. According to a filing on April 27th, the flagging automaker has pegged the soft economy (surprise!) as well as a $5.3 million arbitration apparently won by former drivetrain supplier UQM as the main contributors to its demise. In an update to the situation, however, its CEO has replied to AutoblogGreen in order to reaffirm that it “has not abandoned the alternative fuels transportation space.” Unfortunately, that could mean absolutely anything… or nothing at all. Amazon has acquired Stanza

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Filed under: Software , iPhone , iPod touch Last month Amazon released the free Kindle application for the iPhone in the US [ App Store link ], shortly after the Kindle 2 hit the market. If you haven’t used it yet, it works quite well. Users can buy books (but not subscriptions) from the Kindle Store via Mobile Safari for reading on their iPhones, although the purchasing process is easier from a desktop browser. Unlike the Kindle, the iPhone app is able to display color images, but it lacks text-to-speech as well as a direct connection to the Kindle Store. Whispersync, which synchronizes ebooks between the iPhone app and Kindle, works as advertised. A few weeks ago, we posted a comparison of ebook readers featuring, among others, the iPhone app Stanza [ App Store link ]. As Steve mentioned, Stanza works with nearly every ebook format, even Project Gutenberg etexts. I only used Stanza briefly to check it out and I can say that the UI was very nice. Additionally, the folks who created Stanza have an existing relationship with ebook seller Fictionwise . In fact, Fictionwise created an ebook store just for Stanza users. This week, we’ve learned that Amazon has acquired the company behind Stanza . We can only assume that aspects of Stanza will make it into a future release of Kindle for the iPhone. iPod nano GPS hack ensures that you and your MP3s make it home safely

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Gadget, HD, Mobile

We’ve seen iPod hacks run the gamut, from the useful to the just plain absurd , but no matter how rough around the edges such a project may seem, we always get a kick out of the ingenuity and hard work involved. Today’s DIY wonder comes from a cat named Benjamin Kokes, who’s using his engineering chops to put together a GPS peripheral for the iPod nano. As the project stands right now, he’s taken a reference board sporting a Nemerix GPS and written a screen driver for it, allowing it to do its thing on the handheld. Apparently, all this bad boy is capable of doing right now is finding a satellite and displaying your latitude and longitude — but we’d like to see your old nano do that! Hit the read link for the whole, sordid tale in geek-tastic detail, or to speak with the developer if you’d like to give this a shot your own self. Tell him Engadget sent you. Expect Lost , Desperate Housewives , Greek , General Hospital and the like so show up after the deal closes, no word on any delay periods and the only content not mentioned in the deal appears to be ESPN related properties. Keepin’ it real fake, part CCIV: Nokla beats Nokia to the touchscreen N98 punch

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Gadget, HD, Mobile

Good ol’ Nokla , with its punny branding and utter shameless, has taken upon itself to build the touchscreen N98, based on a sketchy Nokia concept that was making the rounds last year and never materialized. There’s a 3-inch QVGA screen and dual-sim support, but things lean into the realm of Nokia parody with the complete lack of 3G or EDGE data. The worst part is that this phone actually looks kind of nice. All this unintentional humor can be yours for a mere $78. Audyssey DSX surround sound takes the speaker-count war to 11

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Gadget, HD, Mobile

You might think the future of surround audio lies in sophisticated DSP-driven single-box soundbars or even crazy wireless headphones , but Audyssey Labs knows the truth: what you really need is more speakers. Up to 11 of ‘em, to be exact, as part of the company’s new Dynamic Surround Expansion system. Like the 9.1 channel Dolby Pro Logic IIz, DSX focuses more on the audio in front of you, since that’s what your ears are tuned to differentiate the best — in addition to the left, right, and center channels, DSX includes two speakers mounted up high at a 45-degree angle, and two speakers placed farther out to each side to create width. Add in the two surround back channels from a traditional 7.1 rig and presto — you’re up to 11. Yep, that’s a lot of speakers, especially if your loved ones already think a standard 5.1 system is an eyesore. On the other hand — 11 freaking speakers . DSX-enabled receivers are expected to arrive by summer, just in time to close the shades and spend all day indoors watching movies.
